First Grade

First grade is a benchmark year signaled by the move to the "Big Building."

First Grade emphasizes a structured literacy approach based on the science of reading, a literature-based approach to reading, as well as continued phonics and reading strategy instruction. Teaching groups become even smaller, allowing for increased differentiation to address readiness and skill scaffolding. Children complete their first research project on an Australian animal. Math instruction includes many hands-on experiences in order to build strong number sense and problem-solving skills.

The social studies units invite students to explore our school history, family traditions and customs, Australia, and St. Louis neighborhoods. Children take field trips to neighborhoods including The Hill, The Loop, and the St. Louis Zoo. View our first grade curricular benchmarks below.
