Have a Sketching Adventure with your Child!

Sunday, July 10, 2016

Have a sketching adventure with your child this summer! It's especially fun when you combine it with a field trip to a local park or museum.

This summer, if you’re looking for a creative way to spend the morning or afternoon, consider a creative sketching adventure with your child.  Prior to the adventure, you could pick up a small journal at Target Walmart, Hobby Lobby or Michael’s that will serve as a sketchbook. If it has a plain cover, your child could spend some time personalizing it with collage materials or a drawing.

Once you child has their sketchbook, talk with them about where they’d like to go to do some sketching.  Laumeier Sculpture Park is an open-air museum and sculpture part located in Sunset Hills.  Your child could sit down on a mat that you take and record with their drawings what they see.

The St. Louis Art Museum has art both inside and outside in their new Sculpture Garden.  Talk with your child to find out what area would be appealing to them.

There’s also the zoo or just a local park to find things to sketch!  If your child would prefer photos to sketching, the sketchbook or journal could become a photo journal of all the places they visit during the summer.

To encourage some practice writing, your child could write something about their sketches or photos after the trip.
