Faculty Friday - Sarah McCarthy
Our faculty spotlight this week is on 5th grade teacher Sarah McCarthy. Sarah is celebrating her silver anniversary as an educator - 25 years! - the last six at Community School. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Valparaiso University in Indiana, and her master's in teaching and learning from St. Mary's University in Minnesota. Sarah loves to play the French horn, and if you watch carefully, you might see her joining in with the Community School band from time to time! Let’s learn a little more:
Favorite subject to teach? Literature. I love when children are exposed to new ideas, places, experiences through books. I love the community we build through shared reading.
Favorite spot on campus? Our redesigned space for reading workshop in fifth grade.
Favorite CS memory? My first year at Community School was the 100th Anniversary year! I learned so much about Community's rich history, and the enduring values and principles that still influence what we do at school today.
States lived in? Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri
Favorite team(s)? Green Bay Packers & St. Louis Cardinals
Pets? Buddy - the BEST dog ever
Favorite food? Potato - baked, mashed, roasted, fried. I love them all!
Family/kids? Husband, Mike, and three kids ages 20, 20, and 15.
Favorite band/musical group? Mozart
Other interesting things? During the summer, I lead a group of families who have children adopted from Russia (just like me!) on a birth-country tour. We spend two weeks visiting Moscow, St. Petersburg, and their region of origin.
