Faculty Friday - Karen Larson
Our faculty spotlight this week is on 1S teacher Karen Larson! Karen has spent 9 of her 14 years as an educator at Community School. But growing up in Hawaii plays a big role in who she is, she says. “You can take the girl out of Hawaii, but not the Hawaii out of the girl.” She’s known for signing off emails with “Aloha,” and has won a trip to Las Vegas playing competitive pool. Let’s learn a little more:
Favorite subject to teach? Math. I love how creative we can be with math activities and show that math is everywhere, and it can be fun.
Favorite spot on campus? The Communisaurus playground.
Favorite CS memory? My first field trip to The Hill
Community School “claim to fame”? A little boy once called me "The lady with the lizard,” because I bring my bearded dragon (named Darwin) to school.
Hobbies? APA 8/9 ball pool league, cooking
Pets? 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 bearded dragon, 1 tortoise
Favorite children’s book? Spork by Kyo Maclear
States lived in? Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Missouri
Why Community? Community School is an amazing place to work and learn! We have a child centered atmosphere where children explore and become critical thinkers! Every person here is truly passionate about education. Teachers are given autonomy to be creative, and are supported and pushed to be their best. Faculty, staff, students, and parents are like a family.
