Faculty Friday - Jered Gruszka
Our Faculty Friday Spotlight this week is on Second Grade teacher Jered Gruszka! Jered has been with Community for practically his entire teaching career (all but one year) - he even student taught third grade way back in 2006. Jered knew early on he wanted to be a teacher, and with him it runs in the family, as both his parents are also teachers. His Community claim to fame would have to be his irrepressible spirit - not to mention his famous handstands! Let’s learn some more:
Favorite subject to teach? Math - allows creativity and problem solving. LIFE SKILLS, not just math.
Defining moment as an educator? Seeing my first class sent off to college last year.
Favorite CS memory? 100th year celebration - such an exciting and neat time to be a teacher here
Why Community? It truly is a school I WISH I had gone to when I was little. It's an amazing place to work and I genuinely love coming here each day.
Favorite spot on campus? My room - love the original building - windowsills, brick, etc
Favorite food? Pizza
Favorite team? St. Louis Blues
States lived in? Missouri, that's it
Hobbies? Gardening, sports, & live music
Family: Wife - Angela and kids - Luca (9), Rocco, (7), Roseanna (4)
Favorite memory from your time as a student? Realizing how zestful participation allowed me to move, talk, and engage with my teachers and the curriculum. My attention wasn't always on what it should be - I figured out how to invest myself appropriately and I benefited greatly. I started enjoying school and connecting with students and my teachers. School became fun and I knew I wanted to be a teacher early in life and hopefully instill this in my future students.
What else is interesting about you? Extremely talented at backyard games and still play them as often as possible - washers, frisbee, wiffle ball, etc.
