Children Need to Sleep!

Posted On: 1/12/2018 2:06 PM

An excellent article on the subject: “ The 7 Reasons Your Kids Need Sleep” can be found in Parents magazine: https://www.parents.com/health/healthy-happy-kids/the-7-reasonsyour-kid-needs-sleep/

The current recommendations for sleep by the National Sleep Foundation are:
   Recommended    May be appropriate
 Toddlers (1-2 years) 11 to 14 hours   9 to 10 hours
15 to 16 hours
 Preschoolers (3-5 years)  10 to 13 hours  8 to 9 hours
14 hours
 School-aged children (6-13 years)  9 to 11 hours   7 to 8 hours
12 hours
 Teenagers (14-17 years)  8 to 10 hours  7 hours
11 hours

Are your children getting this amount of sleep?

Furthermore, if you want your child to be the best athlete they can be, the proper amount of sleep is absolutely essential. Another excellent article "A Good Night’s Sleep for Student Athletes" can be found at http://globalsportsdevelopment.org/2013/10/29/good-nights-sleep-student-athlete

In a nutshell, it is during sleep that tissue growth and repair occur after a workout. Without sleep, an athlete can become fatigued which leads to a decrease in both academic and athletic performance. Furthermore, a lack of proper sleep can increase the risk of injury. The proper amount of sleep also contributes to better reaction and sprint times and even personal bests. Sleep is as important a factor for good health and performance as is proper nutrition and exercise!
