Character Education

Community School understands the importance of working with parents to reinforce the positive character development of each child. Our character education program includes community service, family grouping activities and the character word of the month.

Community Service

Community School’s outreach program focuses on good citizenship and an awareness of the community at large. The emphasis is on giving of one's time and energy rather than on monetary donations. Every grade level participates in a service project and most grades are responsible for a specific project. Various programs include gathering gently worn clothing; collecting books, mittens and hats; and filling baskets for needy children. These are schoolwide projects. Some grade-specific ones include visiting nursing home residents or donating money to specific charities.

Family Grouping Activities

The Family Groupings Program promotes character education and good citizenship by bringing children together across grade levels to work on projects such as designing placemats for a homeless shelter's Thanksgiving meal or creating valentines for social service agencies.

Character Word of the Month

A typical word of the month might be "responsibility" or "respect" or "gratitude." Discussions and activities revolving around the word of the month are done individually, as a class and schoolwide. The word is displayed on bulletin boards and in every homeroom. A monthly newsletter is sent to parents to encourage dialogue about the word of the month.
