Integrated Arts Education

The arts at Community are not simply stand-alone subjects – they are an integral part of the educational experience. Both classroom and specialty teachers consciously integrate various forms of art with other curriculum areas, strengthening the overall learning process.

An example of arts integration is our music program. Students work extensively with rhymes, poetry and song as a springboard for musical improvisation and experience (language arts). They explore the mathematical structures of music (math) and learn songs to remember geography, history and culture study (social studies). The music teachers help students develop an understanding of acoustics (science) while encouraging grace, coordination and dexterity through movement and instrumental play (P.E.). Children of all ages learn choral pieces in French, Spanish, German and many other world languages, and are provided with opportunities to experiment with lines, patterns and symmetry (art). This learning takes place in both the music classroom as well as in their homerooms.

The integration of arts and academics throughout the School, along with differentiated instruction, allow our students both to learn and to demonstrate their understanding in ways that capitalize on their abilities and interests. They learn to appreciate balance and to explore multiple ways to solve problems. They are exposed to new ways of thinking, and the concepts they read in textbooks or see on the SmartBoard are reinforced in multiple formats. Through arts integration, our students’ minds make unique and insightful connections that expand their perceptions and enhance their creative problem-solving capacities. They become truly prepared for a lifetime of learning.
