Financial Aid General Information

There is no question that an independent school education is costly, and we realize that many families are concerned about meeting these expenses. Community understands that the primary financial responsibility for a student’s education rests with his or her family, and the school naturally assumes that families will do what they can to pay school costs, including maximizing parents’ earnings, adjusting spending priorities, and managing assets. To make a Community School education affordable for those whose ability to pay school costs is limited, financial aid - based on the demonstrated need of a family - is available. Financial aid at Community is intended to increase the socioeconomic diversity of the student body by assisting the families of academically qualified students.

Eligibility for financial assistance is based on a family’s demonstrated need and all financial aid is given in the form of grants that do not have to be repaid. In 2011-12, Community granted approximately 20% of the student body need-based assistance ranging from partial to almost full tuition. Families from a wide range of income levels have qualified for assistance based on individual family circumstances.

An application for aid will not influence an application for admission. All information regarding a family’s application for financial aid is confidential. Decisions regarding amounts of financial assistance are determined by the Financial Aid Committee after the Admissions Committee determines eligibility for admission.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

When completing the admission application, check the appropriate box to indicate that you are requesting financial aid. The Business Office will subsequently forward all the necessary forms to you with detailed instructions and deadlines. In order to determine the financial need of a family, Community uses the School and Student Service for Financial Aid, and requires financial documentation such as federal tax returns to be submitted. More information on specific requirements will be provided from the Business Office at the time of the application. If a student is offered a place at Community, his/her family will receive information about any financial assistance they are eligible for with the letter of acceptance.
