Community School has a beautiful 16-acre campus tucked away at the end of Lay Road in Ladue.
Classrooms are housed in three buildings. The newest of these is the Early Childhood Center built in 1994. The 8,000 square foot center houses the nursery, junior and senior kindergarten classes, each having self-contained classrooms and direct access to the outdoors. A community room with a fireplace connects all five classrooms. The space is designed specifically to meet the developmental and educational needs of these young children. The classrooms are open and spacious where children can explore various learning centers and imaginative play areas throughout their day.
The main facility feels as much like a rambling home as it does like a school building. Hallways wander and lead to nooks, crannies, and places of discovery. Many rooms have bay windows, and all have sunlight streaming in. Students enter the building through the Community Center, a spacious room with a vaulted ceiling where sunlight filters in through high windows. The children and staff gather here every day for a community lunch. There is evidence on every wall that this is a place for children. Paintings, drawings, quilts, and murals made by the children fill the spaces and sprinkle the room with bright colors.
Other notable features of the campus include the Hobler Nature trail, which spans the circumference of the grounds; a shallow pond, often used for science and ecology study; a butterfly garden; and extensive playing fields and playgrounds. The outdoor areas are fully utilized by all grades, in all kinds of weather — even including sledding in the winter!
