Music is well integrated into the curriculum at Community School. Beginning comfortably in Nursery, where musical concepts are introduced with “Forte the Frog” and “Piano the Pig,” the children soon develop an understanding of rhythm and sound.
First graders start learning to play various mallet instruments. Beginning in second grade, students start playing recorders. And in fourth grade, students may take part in the school band
By the end of sixth grade, each student can read and play music with an understanding of music theory and terminology, and has also written at least one original musical composition.
Students frequently perform choral pieces during Thursday assemblies, and the annual Holiday Programs (one for N-1st and one for 2nd-6th) are truly impressive displays of students’ musical talent.
Children also deepen their understanding of people and countries by studying the music of various cultures.
